I use a 'hybrid' approach on the personal PCs that I maanage. I am in process of migrating from one solution to another. The TO-BE model is as follows: A) Employ Acronis True Image to take full volume image backups on a regular basis. The only drawback of their solution, is that the base prodict will only full volume restore to LIKE devices. They now have an add-on that will restore to unlike devices! B) Supplement that with ONLINE backup from ACRONIS. The neat thing about the ACRONIS online solution is that I can backup from multple PCs to a common account for one yearly charge! $49.95/yr for up to 5 PCs and a total of 250G. I was using DELL Online Backup (which is via Symantec, I beleive). I had a hard drive failurs on one of the laptops. Restoring the image was FAST. Restoring the files from online backup was UGLY! It took days with multiple failures. I am not a fan of Dell Backup! The next step I am going to do is get a method/schedule to keep the backup drive 'off-site' (ie; detached garage, friend's house, etc) One last thought on this topic. If you plan to do online backups, consider the UPLOAD speed of your ISP. Most people have 384K or 512K. The ATT DSL 6M tier has an UPLOAD speed to 768K. It can really make a difference in backup time! Joe Gill
